The event "Torino City Lab 1 year on" was the framework for the launch of two call for testing promoted by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Italian Space Agency (ASI), with the aim of providing evidence of the advantages deriving from the link of space and 5G technologies.
The calls are addressed to companies that want to experiment on Cultural Heritage and Law enforcement and emergency response, with the intent to create new services that exploit the technologies of space to bring benefits to the local communities.
The initiative aims to stimulate submission of proposals by industry and institutions to study, develop and demonstrate applications based on space and 5G addressing the use cases by December 18, 2019. More information is available on ESA website.
ESA is an international organisation with the task of developing and completing the European space programme, with particular regard to the development of satellite technologies and services and the promotion of the European space industry. Its main mission is to ensure that investments in aerospace continue to benefit european and world citizens.
The two calls are part of the Memorandum of Intent signed by ESA and the City of Turin, with the aim to support the development of services for smart cities, based on the utilisation of space assets such as GNSS, Earth Observation and Satellite communication, integrated with 5G networks. The purpose of the administration is to foster the development of innovative and high social impact applications in the urban context, while at the same time creating new opportunities for citizens and industry and establishing relations with international organisations and research centres.
As part of the agreement, the City of Turin will make its expertise and the assets of Torino City Lab available to promote the city as a space open to experimentation with innovative solutions, supporting the aerospace ecosystem and attracting new companies and skills.
